The Elia Group, as a pioneer in its field, is involved in a number of international projects that aim to address the new challenges facing the world in the 21st century.
European policies on the integration of renewable energies, market integration and security of supply are radically changing the landscape in which electricity transmission system operators carry out their activities.
The emergence of new technologies, such as Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) and Voltage Source Converter High Voltage Direct Current (VSC HVDC), the expansion of offshore grids and overlay networks (Supergrid), and the development of methods for energy storage and smart(er) grid management are all bound up with these new challenges for the next 20 years.
This is set to have a major impact on transmission systems in terms of both investment in infrastructure and the integration of huge amounts of variable energy sources into the systems in question.
Drawing on the skills and expertise of its personnel, the Elia Group is a driving force behind the construction of future grids and so is taking part in a range of international projects, which clearly put into practice our Group vision.
