Coalition of NGOs, wind industry and TSOs pledge to work together for a sustainable offshore energy development
A Coalition of NGOs, wind industry and transmission system operators has joined forces today to cooperate on the sustainable deployment of offshore wind, while ensuring alignment with nature protection and healthy marine ecosystems. 18 organisations from across Europe have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and committed themselves to working together.
The founding organisations are:
“Developing offshore wind energy is a significant contribution to achieve the climate objectives. However, this should be done in a careful and collaborative approach gathering all actors in order to identify the best locations and grid designs while at the same time protecting and even creating benefits for the environment. The setup of the Offshore Coalition by RGI demonstrates the willingness of a multitude of stakeholders to find common ground in tackling this challenge. Elia group firmly supports this approach necessary to make offshore investments acceptable and future proof.”
Chris Peeters, CEO Elia Group
“Offshore wind energy plays a key role in achieving climate protection targets. 50Hertz makes a contribution to this and aims to cover 100 percent of the electricity demand in its grid area from renewable energies by 2032. In order to achieve these goals, a wide range of cooperation is required - with industry as well as with nature and environmental associations. We believe that this joint initiative with industries and NGOs is key to align offshore wind energy and grid infrastructure with nature protection and healthy marine ecosystems. The use of the sea for energy generation must go hand in hand with the protection of sensitive ecosystems.”
Stefan Kapferer, CEO 50Hertz
