50Hertz Transmission is one of Germany’s four power transmission system operators
50Hertz is responsible for the operation, maintenance, planning, and expansion of the 380/220 kilovolt transmission grid throughout the northern and eastern part of Germany (federated states of Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg).
Its grid covers an area larger than 109,619 km² and runs a length of approx. 10,200 km – the distance from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro. It is the technical backbone that reliably supplies power to around 18 million people.
A substantial proportion of renewable energy is injected into 50Hertz’s control area, making it one of Europe’s main electricity-exporting regions. The wind energy injected into the 50Hertz grid currently accounts for more than 40% of the country’s wind-power capacity.
