Elia Transmission is the Belgian high-voltage transmission system operator (from 70,000 to 380,000 volts).
Following the liberalization of the electricity market in 2001, Elia was appointed as Belgian transmission system operator for 20 years. When liberalisation took place, a clear distinction was made between the power transmission and generation activities that were previously carried out within the same company.
Elia operates, maintains and develops the Belgian high-voltage grid (voltages from 70,000 to 380,000 volts), comprising a total of more than 8,000 km of underground cables and lines throughout Belgium.
Today, Elia has more than 1,000 committed employees, operating a grid that is regarded as one of the most central and reliable in Europe. Its headquarters is in Brussels but it has administrative sites and service centres, which are responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the grid, throughout the country.
