North Sea Project (Elia)

Taking the first steps toward an international North Sea grid

In the long term, the goal is to build an international offshore grid connected to an international platform in direct current. With this long term approach, Elia wants to concentrate a high capacity of wind energy on one connection point. The first step in this process is to build a “multiple socket” kind of grid in the North Sea to to connect the Belgian offshore windparks to one central point instead of connecting each wind farm individually, resulting in a jumble of cables.

Benefits

Facilitate access to other types of (renewable) energy (for example hydropower from Scandinavia or solar energy from Southern Europa or Africa) even when there is no wind;

Enhance security of supply

Timing

The long term vision will take form in 2025. The first steps of this vision are discussed and developed with the involved stakeholders.
