Guardians of the Grid - Episode 4

This summer, the Elia teams in Leest once again demonstrated what it means to be ‘guardians of the grid’. Several months later, we look back on the storm that hit the Mechelen region this summer, causing nine high-voltage pylons to topple over.

Our 5-part series, ‘Guardians of the Grid’, highlights the qualities that characterise our teams so well: expertise, commitment with safety as a top priority, cooperation, empathy, and a sense of duty to the community. Plug into new episodes each week in which residents, authorities, experts, and colleagues who were directly affected by this event reflect on the management of this crisis.

Clearing power lines is a delicate job, as technician Karim Dernate tells us in episode 4. All the high-voltage cables that came down must also be lifted back up. It’s quite a job! Our colleagues pull out all the stops to do it as quickly and cleanly as possible. After all, it is no fun when your roof is pierced by an electricity cable. With respect for the houses and precision in the approach, most of the pylons are cleared smoothly.
